Let me give you some basic information; Allegiant is the final instalment of the Divergent trilogy, a dystopian, young adult series that follows the life of Beatrice (or, Tris) Prior and her friends (and enemies).
As Allegiant is the final book, we already expect questions
to be answered and ends to be tied, however… we do not expect to be left
heartbroken!
I pre-ordered the book so that I could finish it before I
read any spoilers, but part of me wishes I had mentally prepared myself for the
heart breaking plot that punches you in the gut right when you think everyone
will live happily ever after! All right, maybe not everyone, but most
characters.
Like the first two books, this one is also very fast-paced,
but compared to the first two it gives you a double narrative from both Tris
and Tobias. I liked that, before Tobias was one of, if not completely, my
favourite character, so it was nice to know him even better.
I’m not sure the massive heart break at the end was
completely necessary. I understand why it happened and I think it was a brave decision
of Veronica Roth, but I also think that a different ending may have fitted
better. I can’t completely say why I think that, apart from it would have saved
me from crying and being an emotional wreck. But, aside from that, I just think
something else would have been more fitting, maybe. Not to say the Veronica
Roth did a bad job, the book is literally brilliant. I think Tris died because
she would have not been able to live if she had allowed Caleb to die, she had
seen too many people die and didn’t want to see another, even though it meant
leaving Tobias behind. I think that’s the main reason. In all honestly, I could
write an essay about why I think she gave her life for Caleb’s. And I’d like
to.
I’ve been on Tumblr (naturally) and most people are saying
the same thing; how heart breaking it was, how the book was unputdown-able, how
we need more… But I think people should be talking about one character a bit
more, Christina. She suffered a lot throughout all three books, and although
attention was brought to it, I feel like people should appreciate her strength
and bravery a bit more. She lost a lot of people but always carried on going,
and even at the very end, made sure people were Ok.
It’s the following day to when I finished the book now, and
I’m still going over it in my head and I don’t think I’ve accepted the
fictional death of this fictional character… I don’t plan to, either.
This isn't a review, just some thoughts.
